Dishes that are traditionally served vegan

Deep-fried thin plantains slices

Tostones

Rice dish made with pigeon peas/ beans, onions, coconut milk and other vegetables

Moro de guandules

Cooked plantain, can be served as a side dish or with sugar and cinnamon for dessert. Make sure: no butter is added

Plátano Sancochado

Red bean stew made with beans, onions, tomatoes and herbs. Make sure: no meat broth is used

Habichuelas

Salad made from lettuce, and other vegetables/ toppings. Make sure: no meat or cheese is added

Green/Garden salad

Fried ripe plantains, usually served as a sweet snack or as a side dish

Plátano Maduro frito

Fresh seasonal fruits like papaya, melons and banana

Fruit salad

Cassava flat thin crumbly bread. Make sure: no cheese is used

Casabe

Soft wheat bread made with water

Pan de agua

Wheat round bread made with coconut milk and coconut flakes. Make sure: no milk is used

Pan de coco

Mashed pumpkin/ squash with fried onions on top. Make sure: no cheese is added

Mazamorra

Sweetened corn powder, usually served in a paper cone

Gofio

Hot sweet water-based cocoa drink

Chocolate de agua

Sesame seeds/peanuts sweet bar snacks

Dulce de ajonjolí/maní

Dishes that can be Veganized

Dishes that are not vegan by default, but can be made so, by asking to remove or change part of the ingredients.

Mashed plantain served as a side dish, will commonly contain butter and/or milk. To veganize: ask for no butter or milk

Mangú

Grilled plantains served as a side dish with cheese on top. To veganize: ask for no cheese

Plátano asado

Fried rice with small noodle pieces, fried in butter. To veganize: ask for it to be fried in oil and make sure no meat broth was used

Arroz con fideos

Fried plantain mash with olive oil, garlic and pork. To veganize: ask to make without meat

Mofongo

Dishes that are not vegan, but appear to be

Dishes that might look vegan, but contain animal products.

Usually made with dairy and/ or meat broth

Vegetable soups

Coconut candy sticks, the soft ones usually made with milk (hard ones usually vegan)

Palitos de coco

Traditional stew made with vegetables, roots and meat

Sancocho

Grated coconut candy usually made with honey

Jalao

Cornmeal rolls, usually made with milk or butter

Bollitos de maiz

Corn pilaf usually made with milk or butter
